The Miracle of Life

How are our amazing bodies organized? Well, there are 6 basic levels:

1.Chemical. Atoms are the tiniest parts of matter, there's nothing smaller! They combine to make molecules (for example, water and proteins). These become organelles, and they in turn, are parts of cells, which leads us to stage two!
2. Cellular. These guys are the smallest units of LIVING things (whereas atoms are the smallest of NON-Living). The study of cells is called microbiology. All cells have similiar functions, but also they have a lot of variation as to size and shape, depending on their separate functions in the body.
3. Tissues. Histology teaches us that groups of cells with similar functions become tissues, of which the four types are: epithelium (covers body and lines cavities), muscle (provides movement), connective (supports organs and protects them), and nervous, which is what this class makes me...no,wait..nervous tissue uses electrical impulses to give us fast internal communication.
4. Organs. If you take at least two types of tissue (but four is more common) and put them together, you get organs. They perform specific functions for the body. The functions get a LOT more complex, at this level. At this point, the study is called anatomy, which deals with the structure of the body. Examples are the stomach, heart, and liver.
5. Organ systems. Organs that work together for a specific purpose are called organ systems. All together, the human body has: digestive, nervous, endocrine, circulatory, respiratory, urinary, reproductive, integumentary, skeletal, muscle, and lymphatic systems. The study of this level is called physiology.
6. Organismal. Put them all togther and, tada! You get the human organism. All structural levels working together result in the miracle of life.

I see you've used our origami embryo to your advantage in your first major blog entry. It was put together very neat. I like it. Happy Birthday to you tomorrow!

Stephan,
yes, I agree with your group members--nice job. Nice and concise and really covers the main points in what may win the award for the most clearly organized and formatted blog. Keep it up..you might work on bringing in a bit more detail now and using some online sources that you can copy in images, but please keep the concise and neat organization!!

please be sure you read the general blog instructions that are now posted on the Blog home page for the course. Especially regarding referencing and using your own words. Also, if you haven't done so, please comment on the other blogs in your color group according to those instructions.

Hi Stephan,
I think you did a great job on this entry. I think the two best things about it are:
1. It is all summarized in your own words and it is short and concise. It's hard to put all of this material into a small outline, but you did it and did it well.
2. I like your titles, they are unique and very catchy.

The two worst parts are:
1. The only thing I found hard to follow was the one big paragraph for the Fetal development.
2. I can't think of anything else constructive to say that is negative, other than maybe next time to add images :)
